Our society has radically been changed by the media, not only by mass media, like television or radio, but especially by social networks, like Facebook or Twitter. In my opinion, this change can be considered absolutely positive.
Firstly, media have the power to spread real time news all over the world, so that we can get to know what is going on in the other parts of the globe in any moment (terrorist attacks, important meetings and so on). This is extremely important in such a globalized world because our life always more depends on worldwide dynamics.
Moreover, media has undoubtedly reduced the distances and the lapse of time necessary to communicate with people far from us. Space has shrunk and this has revealed revolutionary especially for migrants, who can now keep in contact with their relatives thanks to mobile phones and online platforms, like Skype. The so called "diasporic media" (ethnic or exilic televisions) allow delocalized cultures to keep their own culture alive, fighting the distorted depictions given by national media about them sometimes.
Furthermore, media are an incredible instrument to enrich our knowledge about the world we live in. New songs, new movies, new discoveries are announced through media, particularly radio, television and online newspapers. They also let us explore distant places, with their traditions and peculiarities by means of documentaries, making us move around the world even if we cannot afford it.
For these reasons, I think that media represent a positive conquest for our lives, if we consciously resort to them in moderation.
