AIMS

The
course aims to teach a method of reading the built landscape through the
characters common to buildings and urban fabrics.
Despite their
great variety and complexity, in such characters some common and continuous
formative principles can be recognized inside homogeneous areas. The
fundamental notions of organism and process will be used to read the built
landscape. The term "reading" does not indicate the simple and
neutral recording of phenomena, but requires the active contribution of the
reader, creating a synthesis of the will of the subject and the attitude of
'object.

The main
purpose of the typological study proposed by the course is precisely the
identification of the qualitative differences contained in the characters of
the built reality, the recognition of the process of their formation and
transformation, their internal dialectic of extensive exchanges and
integrations.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Each lesson
will be divided into two different parts:

  1. the first aims to provide the student, through
the morphological / processural method of Muratorian derivation, with the
tools to recognize in the built reality the complex permanence of the
notions of organism and process in the crisis circumstances induced by the
    contemporary condition;
  2. the second will consist of a series of
independent lectures given by external professors, or conferences of
international experts in the Main Hall, on complementary subjects. The
purpose of these lectures is to give a general idea of the contemporary
studies on urban form through the knowledge of methods different from
    those followed by the course.

"Morphological walks" close to the Faculty of Architecture
will be organized in small groups to examine the fabrics and buildings under
study

PRACTICAL EXERCISES

The goals of the course will be pursued, as well as
through theoretical lectures, also through some practical exercises of redesigning that the student will have
to carry out with the assistance of the teachers.

The exercises can be carried out in groups up to a
maximum of three students.

EXAMINATION

At the
end of the course the student will present for discussion a notebook concerning
the topics of the lessons (possibly supplemented by personal considerations and
complementary topics developed independently) and will present the exercises
carried out.
