The “Law and Religion” course aims to analyze the main themes and issues related to the relationship between law and religion in Europe, within the dual context of the Council of Europe and the European Union. In particular, it aims to provide students with essential knowledge about this relationship and the various models of interaction between states and religious organizations in the European context, with a specific focus on religious freedom—both individual and collective—in its many dimensions. Particular emphasis is placed on the system for protecting the right to religious freedom within national and supranational legal frameworks, with specific reference to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Through the concepts covered in class and independent study, the goal is to develop students’ knowledge and their ability to interpret relevant international and national legal instruments, as well as the related case law. The ultimate goal is to equip students with the ability to critically address the various aspects of the relationship between law and religion in Europe, in light of the current multiethnic, multicultural, and multireligious evolution of the Western world.
