In the Architectural Design Studio for Urban Regeneration, students develop—through individual and seminar-based activities, including lectures and exercises—an urban regeneration project for the former Manifattura Tabacchi in Rome’s Ostiense neighborhood.

The Manifattura Tabacchi building was designed by Pierluigi Nervi and today, having outlived its original function, is partially abandoned and occupied inappropriately.  The plan is therefore to transform it by incorporating services and new building types within the reinforced concrete structural framework of the original design.

The area as a whole is of strategic interest due to its proximity to the new City Hall (Campidoglio 2 project), the Città dei Giovani on the site of the former General Markets, and the presence of vast vacant areas—currently used as parking lots—to be redeveloped through landscaping projects.
