The main objectives ofthe course Physics Laboratory I are the learning of the physical principles governing the interaction between electromagnetic radiation or particles and matter, the operating principles of particle sources and detectors, as well as laboratory techniques and their theoretical foundations, with the aim of preparing students for the laboratory work carried out in the subsequent course Physics Laboratory II.
The Particle Physics track is aimed at students interested in experimental particle physics. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with the operating principles of gas detectors, solid-state detectors, electromagnetic calorimeters, particle identification techniques (including those based on the Cherenkov effect), magnetic spectrometers, and photon detectors (PMTs, photodiodes, and similar devices). A short introduction to the statistical methods to be used in laboratory data analysis will also be given.
