In line with the educational objectives of the Study programme in which it is included, this course aims to provide participants with fundamental knowledge and comprehension skills within the context of the historical, political, philosophical, and ideological events that laid the foundation for the Western discovery of the pre-classical traditions found in Oriental civilizations.

The course endeavors to offer an overview of the primary ways through which Europe attempted to assimilate the languages and cultures of the ancient East, with particular focus on Sumerian-Akkadian and Babylonian-Assyrian Mesopotamia. In doing so, we will provide an account of the cultural and ideological-religious landscape in which the Old Continent grappled from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will have acquired a general understanding of research methods and critical interpretation within the field of historical studies. Consequently, students will be capable of effectively conveying their acquired knowledge in a competent and reflective manner, exercising independent judgment, and thereby developing the skills essential for pursuing further studies.
