This is ISO's first-year, two-semester, in-person (no online classes, at the moment) English course for canale 2: students of Arabic, Korean, Hindi and Persian. The program is the same as the course for canale 1 (Chinese and Japanese), and so are the exams. My class meets on Tuesdays, 17-19  in Aula 202 (Marco Polo) and on Wednesdays 17-19 in Aula 103 (Marco Polo).

This year we are breaking in (idiomatic expression!) a new textbook:

                           ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ ‎ 978-0357458716

Voices Upper-Intermediate

 with Online Practice and

Student's eBook

Authors : Daniel Barber; Marek Kiczkowiak.

1st Edition Published 2022 by National Geographic Learning

The exam has always been a 30-question multiple-choice exam (written only) on the contents of the units we do in the first year. And that doesn't just mean grammar! Anzi, it's more vocabulary than grammar, because at this B2 level, you are expanding vocabulary and learning all about shades of meaning (nice expression!) in different situations. The textbook features videos and audios that also involve non-native speakers of English, which is one of the reasons why we chose it for you, ISO students, who will be speaking English with non-native speakers in your future travels for study and work.

IMPORTANT: If you possess a B2 or higher language certificate such as Cambridge, ESOL, or IELTs, taken from June 2020 on (for B2, non time limit for C1 or up), you don't need to take my exam. But you must send a copy of your certificate to my colleague, Alexandra Smit (canale 1), and copy me in the email.

Information on Certifications:

We accept Cambridge ESOL, IELTS and others which are subject to verification (not Trinity though).

The certifications have to be a minimum of B2 level. With Cambridge’s First Certificate you get the following grades validated

in a mark expressed out of 30:

Grade C = 26

Grade B = 28

Grade A = 30

If you have a Cambridge Advanced Certificate for C1 level or above you get a 30+.

This mark will then be added to your Linguistics exam result. Your final mark in English will be an average of the 2 marks.

If the certification is a B2 level, we will only accept those from June 2020 onwards (as they expire after 2 years). For C1 and

above we accept exams taken prior to June 2020 as well.

Please send a scanned copy to alexandra.smit@uniroma1.it in a .pdf format (preferred) or .jpg and please name the file with

your name and surname (i.e. Mario Rossi’s certification will be Mario Rossi.pdf).
