Per una rivisitazione del Neoclassicismo. La memoria dell’antico e le arti nella Roma del Settecento
Sebbene la manualistica continui a riproporre per lo più un’idea delle arti a Roma incardinata al binomio Winckelman-Mengs e all’idea di una stagione cosiddetta neoclassica che sarebbe fiorita subito dopo la metà del Settecento, gli studi più recenti hanno evidenziato un percorso storico e artistico affatto diverso. Il classicismo nel Settecento, che alimenta le Arti dell’Urbe, affonda le sue radici nel secolo precedente, innestato su una cultura antiquaria che trova un alimento sostanziale nel fenomeno del Grand Tour. Roma offre nel secolo dei Lumi all’Europa un’identità collettiva che trova nella memoria dell’antico una fonte inesauribile di modelli sociali, culturali e artistici. Il corso intende ripercorrere gli anni nei quali l’Urbe si pone al centro degli interessi internazionali, evidenziando istituzioni, artisti, e iniziative culturali che ne hanno promosso la fama che sconfina nel mito.

Revisiting Neoclassicism. The memory of antique and arts in eighteenth-century Rome
Recent studies have highlighted a different historical and artistic approach compared to art manuals which continue to give an idea of arts based on Winckelman-Mengs’s concept and the so-called Neoclassical period that would have flourished after mid-eighteenth century. Eighteenth-century Classicism, which powers Roman arts, has its roots firmly anchored in the previous century grafted onto an antiquarian culture nourished by Grand Tour phenomenon. During the Enlightenment, Rome offers to Europe a common identity that finds an unlimited source of social, cultural and artistic models in the memory of the antique. The course aims to retrace the years in which Rome was at the centre of international interests, highlighting institutions, artists, and cultural initiatives that have promoted its fame that strays into the myth.
